Last weekend, Bland was pulled over in Waller County, Texas by a State Trooper for a traffic violation and was later arrested for allegedly assaulting a public servant. On Monday morning, Bland was found hanging in her jail cell. The death was ruled a suicide; however, those who were close to Bland say that she would never kill herself.
Bland was very vocal against police brutality and racism using the hashtag #SandraSpeaks. She was actively involved in the community as a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and she had just landed her dream job. Bland is described as someone who had a positive outlook on life and had everything to live for, which is why those who knew her and know her story suspect foul play.
Texas Rangers are investigating Bland’s death, but a petition is drawn to have the federal government take over. There’s also a petition to have an autopsy performed outside of Waller County.
Sandra Bland was moving from Illinios to Texas to start her new career at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M University. She would’ve started on Wednesday.
