Secretly Damaged

In high school, he was one of the popular guys. Everyone loved to be in his presence. People would come around him to experience his great sense of humor and to simply let everyone know that they were cool enough to have his attention. He appeared to have it all; money, a car, ladies chasing after him, and the potential to be nothing less than great. Now, he’s a first year college student. College would, actually should be a breeze for him right? He is supposed to go to a big university, make straight A’s, have tons of friends, and just live his life to the fullest with no worries. That’s how it’s supposed to be, right? Would you ever imagine that this great of a guy deals with issues that nearly drags him to depression every now and then? No one would ever see THIS guy feeling lonely and lacking confidence. People wipe out the reality that THIS guy actually has a past…

As she walks past you, you are greeted with the biggest smile. Her smile is one that is not only gorgeous, but it also warms your heartdepressed and worried and in a way it comforts you. She is intelligent, top of her class in high school. You notice that her talents are beyond measure as she pursues her passion. Now that she’s in college, she remains humble and continues to enjoy life as if she does not have a care in the world. She appeared to have it all; beauty, brains, ambition, and a personality that lights up any room. She is supposed to go to a big university, make straight A’s, have tons of friends, and just live life to the fullest with no worries. That’s how it’s supposed to be, right? If I told you that she had the self-esteem of someone who has been battered all of their life, would you believe it? No one can see that THIS girl gives her all to people who do nothing but step all over her and ruin her heart. Everyone forgets that THIS girl has a past…

“Everything that glitters isn’t gold.” “Never judge a book by it’s cover.” All of our lives we have been told to never attempt to understand a person until you understand their struggle. However, we do not apply to everyday life. In our eyes, if you seem to have it all together, then you do. Society places people on a pedestal based off of how they present themselves. We tend to forget that contrary to outer appearances, no one is perfect.

You will never truly understand someone’s story unless you are placed in their shoes. People, young or old, battle with anything from bad relationships, health issues, and low confidence to family issues and financial burdens. Everyone does not show their misery so it is not always possible to decipher if someone is going through something  or not. You may come encounter with “That Guy” or “That Girl” and never even realize it.

  1. Reminded me of something a friend once said. “When the grass looks greener on someone else’s lawn, think about what they are throwing on it to make it look that way.”
