Super Bowl XLVII has arrived and the contenders are set. The battle for the championship title happens today at the Mercedes Benz Dome in New Orleans, LA but we’ll get into the Super Bowl matchup later.
NFL Division Title Champs
First let’s give credit where credit is due giving recognition to the division title champs that matched up with their opponents in the AFC and NFC conference games.
Congratulations to the Atlanta Falcons for winning the NFC South division title. A successful 13-3 regular season record secured home field advantage throughout the playoffs. A notable contributor to the team’s success is Tight End and future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez. Gonzalez had an important pass completion which led to Matt Bryant’s infamous field goal with three seconds left and a Falcons dramatic victory over the Seattle Seahawks. The Atlanta Falcons playoff run came to an end with a post season record of 1-1 and a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game.
The San Francisco 49ers won the NFC West division title with the second best record in the regular season behind the Atlanta Falcons. San Francisco hosted the Green Bay Packers at home and won. Then the 49ers went on to defeat the Atlanta Falcons and pulled off a NFC championship win.
The New England Patriots were AFC East title champs and hosted the Baltimore Ravens in Foxboro. The Baltimore Ravens also winners of their division title in the AFC North but weren’t expected to get past the Denver Broncos to go to the AFC Championship game. The Ravens came out on top in an upset and went on to defeat the top seeded New England Patriots.
Alright, here is one exception and one more division title champ. The Denver Broncos crept up in their division and won the AFC West title after a slow start in the regular season. Peyton Manning came back true to form in his notorious #18 jersey and led the Broncos to a stunning come from behind win over the San Diego Chargers during the regular season. Manning’s wins continued and the Broncos found themselves in first place in the AFC West heading into the post season with home-field advantage. Denver fell short of a victory against the Ravens and did not continue on to the AFC championship game.
Super Bowl XLVII Contenders
So it all comes down to the San Francisco 49ers vs. the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl 2013 airing tonight on CBS network. Here is one thing the head coaches have in common, they have the same parents. Jim Harbaugh head coach of the 49ers and John Harbaugh head coach for the Baltimore Ravens both plan to make the game interesting for their opponent. This NFL season’s Super Bowl game is too close to call and choosing a winner can be like flipping a coin, a 50/50 shot and ultimately you won’t know until is over. The fans will have to watch and see how this one plays out, needless to say, for my pick I’m going to go with undecided.
